Security

Gabon is one of the most peaceful and safest countries on the African continent. Political upheaval has been rare, and instances of violent crimes are so infrequent as to be untypical.

That said, it still pays to be watchful and vigilant, as petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching are still rampant, particularly in the capital Libreville.

Libreville can be somewhat forbidding, particularly at night. Avoid dark spots in the city at night. If you must travel at night, it’s best to hire a taxi, so that you don’t become fair game for opportunistic muggers.

Health

Gabon is a hot, arid land, and dehydration is a major risk. Drink lots of water, to ensure that you don’t get dehydrated without even your knowledge. However, avoid tap water in the country, as it can make you ill. Take bottled water instead. Also, watch what you eat. Roadside food may make you sick.

Malaria also holds sway in several parts of the country, so it’s great to come prepared. Take normal precautionary measures such as using repellents, sleeping under mosquito nets, and wearing protective clothing.

HIV has a high prevalence in the country, so, avoid unprotected sex throughout your stay in the country.

Visa Requirements

If you’re from Cameroon, the Central African Republic, South Africa, Tunisia, and a whole host of other  African countries, you can get into the country without needing a visa. Others from EU countries, as well as Japan, Kuwait, and the USA can obtain a visa on arrival valid for 90 days.

Visas can be acquired at the country’s missions or embassies in your country. Also, bear in mind that you’ll be required to present a certificate verifying that you’ve been vaccinated against Yellow Fever and other ailments such as typhoid and meningitis.

People and Culture

The official language spoken in the country is French. Other languages spoken in the country include Myene, Fang, and Panjabi.

The people in the country are friendly, warm, and generous and would usually go out of their way to be helpful to you.

One thing you shouldn’t do at all, though, is to take pictures of government buildings and law enforcement agents. If you get arrested, you’ll go through a whole lot of trouble to extract yourself from their trap.
