Security

Eswatini is relatively peaceful, with a lower crime rate than most other countries in Africa. However, being an absolute monarchy, the country sometimes takes a very high-handed approach to administration. It’s a grievous offense to insult the monarch or the royal family, and activism of any kind will be swiftly and decisively dealt with.

Physical violence is not common, yet caution still advise. You shouldn’t wander alone after dark, and make sure you keep your money and other valuables well hidden. Ostentatious displays of privilege or wealth do not advise. 

Animals are also unconventional safety threats in the country. Hippos are very dangerous and may lurk in shallow waters. Crocodiles are also present in rivers, so be careful where you choose to swim.

The country has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the world, so you should be very careful about this in the country. Avoid unprotected sex, or ask partners to undergo an HIV test if possible.

Malaria is also prevalent in some parts of the country, so it may be necessary to take adequate precautionary measures such as using repellents and sleeping under mosquito nets.

Eswatini allows citizens from all countries that are members of the European Union, including a whole host of other countries who are not, such as Argentina, Turkey, UAE, The United States, Tanzania, Uganda, etc. to enter the country without visas for a stay of up to 30 days. People from other countries will require a visa before they can visit.

You can apply for an Eswatini visa at a British embassy, consulate, or high commission in the country where you reside if there is no Eswatini embassy there.

English is the official and most widely spoken language in the country. The local language, Swazi, is commonly spoken in the country, exclusively in certain areas.

Eswatini is a Christian country, so dressing modestly, for both males and females, emphasizes. Skirts are compulsory for women who are attending an event where the King is present, or any other important traditional occasion.

In spite of their Christian beliefs, people in Eswatini still have a deep respect for their culture and will consult traditional healers when they fall sick.
