The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa, but what this country lacks in terms of size, more than makes up for natural attractions.
The country boasts some of the most aesthetically pleasing beaches on the continent and vast arrays of exotic wildlife, not to mention the majestic river from which the country got its name. Perhaps the standout feature of this country is its people, whose warmth is only rivaled by the African sun’s. After all, Gambia is not called “the smiling coast of Africa” for nothing.
There’s quite a lot to do in this country, quite a lot to take in. Before you head into Gambia’s welcoming arms, though, here are some things you need to know about the country.
Security
The Gambia is very peaceful and violence is very rare in the country, as the country focuses its efforts on development.
Nevertheless, just like in most other developing nations, the crime rate is high in the country, as the people look for various ways to survive. In Gambia’s case, petty scams seem to be their chosen method of exhibition.
The scams mostly perpetrated by unemployed young men, although older men may be involved also. The general term for these men is Bumsters.
The scams are presented in several formats, all with the ultimate goal of relieving you of your money. A polite but firm refusal should be enough to get them off your back.
Don’t also forget to be vigilant. There are also pickpockets and bag snatchers, especially in crowded areas. Also, being openly critical about the government can land you in serious trouble.
Health
There’s a high prevalence of malaria in the country, so you’ll need to take adequate precautionary measures, especially since the variant here has grown resistant to chloroquine. In addition to normal protective measures (using repellents, sleeping under mosquito nets, wearing covering clothing), it may be a good idea to get vaccinated against malaria.
You also get vaccinated against Yellow Fever and meningitis.
Visa Requirements
The Gambia is very flexible about entry into the country. Gambia offers visa-free entry for up to 90 days to citizens of a multitude of countries including Liberia, Monaco, Nigeria, North Korea, UAE, and Venezuela. Belgian citizens may also enter the country by presenting their national ID card in place of a passport.
The country also offers visas on arrival to citizens of Portugal, France, Spain, and the USA.
People And Culture
The official language of the country is English. Other languages such as Mandinka, Fula, Wolof, and Jola also spoken in the country.
Gambians devout Muslims, but the country is not too conservative, although modesty in dressing encourages. The people of Gambia are known for their warmth, friendliness, and hospitality. And you’re sure to witness several demonstrations of this in the country. Greet them and respond to their greetings. You’ll never go wrong with that.
That said, it’s important to respect the privacy of the locals. Before you take any photographs of people in the country, ask first, as certain people hold certain beliefs about their pictures taken.
