Visiting Ethiopia- What You Need To Know

Spread the love

Ethiopia is one of the most enchanting places to visit in the world. Boasting grand landscapes marked by dizzying heights and claustrophobic lows, sweeping savannah, captivating deserts, and beautiful lakes, unraveling the mysteries of this country is an experience like no other. As a bonus, you’ll also get to come in contact with the country’s rich and diverse culture.

In spite of being one of the oldest countries in the world, Ethiopia’s progress has been stultified by a combination of natural and man-made factors. Now, though, the country is well on the march towards self-realization, and one of its driving forces is tourism.

Ethiopia

With its natural beauty and riveting history, Ethiopia is a very popular tourist destination. The country offers attractions to suit every tourist’s tastes and indeed, there’s no better time than now to visit the country. Before you go, though, here are a few things to know about Ethiopia.

Security and Safety

The crime rate in the country is low and in the capital, instances of violent crime are very rare indeed. However, the country has struggled with terrorism and insurgency in the past and these risks remain. Certain parts of the country are hot, due to the activities of bombers and kidnappers, and they should be avoided. Take good care of your valuables, and, as much as possible, avoid displaying them unnecessarily.

Outside of the major cities, armed robbery remains a major issue. There have been reported cases of carjackings and highway robbery by armed bandits in some areas. Avoid these places and do not travel at night, if possible. Border areas should also be avoided as separatist fighters prowl them.

Health

You may get dehydrated if you don’t drink enough water, so, be sure to carry water with you wherever you go. Tap water is unsafe, so don’t drink that. Drink bottled water instead. Malaria is not a very serious issue in the capital, but it is prevalent in rural areas, especially those parts that are close to lakes.

The medical standards are good in all the major cities. Nevertheless, you may want to take all the drugs you’d need along with you before you enter the country.

Visa Requirements

Ethiopia offers visa-free entry to everyone who’s a citizen of any African country. Kenyans can enter the country visa-free for up to 1 year, while Djibouti nationals can enter the country visa-free for up to 3 months.

Everyone else will need a visa to enter the country. Certain people including nationals of the following countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK, and the US, can get a visa on arrival at the country, valid for three months.

People and Culture

Ethiopians have a very fierce love for their culture and country, and criticizing their choices in any of these areas is a very bad move. You’ll lose any goodwill you may have acquired if you do this. Respectfully engage them on any topic that’s confusing to you instead, and avoid criticizing them

As a sign of respect, Ethiopian men would usually avoid eye contact with women, and address all conversation to the man if you’re out in public with a man. Don’t forget to remove your shoes before you enter any home. It is considered respectful.
