Spread the love

With over 200 ethnic groups and a multitude of breathtaking natural structures, the so called “dead heart of Africa” is a place that bustles with life and visiting Chad is even more memorable.

Chad is bookended at one end by the sweeping grandeur of the Sahara desert and at the other by the mystic Lake Chad. In between is a land dotted with captivating landscapes, and populated by welcoming people who boast rich cultural heritage.

Visiting Chad

If you’re planning to enjoy the charms of this iconic location and get the chance to see some of Africa’s most popular animals, you probably should know these things about the country first:

Safety and Security Visiting Chad

Visiting Chad is not a safe place. The country has had to contend with political instability for several years, giving room for the rise of banditry and terrorism in some parts of the country. Boko Haram, a jihadist group based in neighboring Nigeria, has spread into the country in recent years. The situation remains charged up to this day, and the threat of violence remains.

The capital, N’Djamena, is relatively safe, although petty theft and other forms of crime are still rife. Corruption is also very common in the country, and police officers requesting bribes is almost an everyday occurrence.

Health Concerns

Before stepping foot in the country, you’d need to be vaccinated against certain conditions, especially meningitis, which is still pretty common in the country.

Avoid drinking tap water in the country, particularly in places apart from the capital. Drink bottled water instead. Malaria is another thing you’d have to be wary of. Wear clothes that adequately protect you, and use repellents.

In case you get sick during your visit, a number of medical facilities offer decent medical services. Outside of these, the standards leave a lot to be desired.

Visa Requirements While Visiting Chad

Chad is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and visitors from other member states can get into the country without visas. A visa is a necessity if you’re not from any of those states.

In addition to a visa, you’ll also be needing a passport, which is valid for six months before your arrival on the country. You may also need to present proof of vaccination against meningitis and Yellow Fever.

You’d need to obtain your visa before entering the country. However, people from Benin and Equatorial Guinea can get a visa when they enter the country.

People

Chad is very diverse, with about 200 different ethnic groups including Arabs, Hausa, Boulala, Zaghawa, Kanembou, Sara and Massa. The vast majority of people in the country are Muslims, although there are Christians and animists also.

Chadians are relatively friendly, although you should try not to contravene their rules. Dress modestly, especially in the Muslim parts, and avoid drinking alcohol in public. During the months of Ramadan, eating in public is also considered offensive.

Chad has been involved in a long-run Ning conflict with some of her neighbors for several decades. For instance, Chad and Libya are in a long running and bloody conflict, and you should do all you can to avoid getting caught in the middle of it.
