Steeped in mystic as well as historical lore, Benin is one of West Africa’s hidden gems. Widely regarded as the birthplace of voodoo, vodun as it is more traditionally known is more than just religion to the inhabitants of this tiny nation, it is practically embedded in the fabric of the society.
Voodoo is not all this country is about though. The country plays home to elephants, hippos, lions, and a wide variety of birdlife, making this country a perfect location for safaris. The country also boasts a number of picturesque beaches, and Cotonou is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with its own story to tell.
Are you planning to visit Benin soon? Here are a few things to know about the country.
Security
Benin is known to be one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the whole of Africa. Nevertheless, attacks still occur in even the most peaceful countries and Benin is no exception.
The most likely places where visitors can get attacked in the country are beaches at night, nightclubs, and close to hotels.
If you want to maintain safety throughout the trip, try to always be with a trusted local; a tourist guide, or, if you can manage to get one, a friend. They know the places to avoid, and will often help you enjoy your trip in other ways too.
Also, for female tourists, avoid walking alone at night.
Health
You can safely drink tap water in Benin, but the water contains a high chlorine content, which some people are sensitive to. The best option is to get bottled water.
Malaria is a serious health challenge in the country, and you can only get access to anti-malaria drugs if it’s been prescribed for you. Take standard precautionary measures such as wearing protective clothing, using mosquito repellents and mosquito nets. Further, go with your anti-malaria pills.
HIV has a high prevalence rate in the country, so ensure that you don’t engage in unprotected sex in the country. While the country does not strictly enfore her vaccination requirements, it’s good to ensure that you’ve been vaccinated against a wide range of ailments before entering the country.
Visa Requirements
Benin offers visa-free entry to everyone who’s a citizen of an African country. Everyone else would need a visa before entry into the country can be authorized.
However, you can also procure e-visas very easily, quickly and relatively cheaply. You’d also need a valid passport, and proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever. That last part is not strictly enforced though.
People And Culture
The major and official language spoken in Benin is French, although about 50 other African languages such as Yoruba, Fon, Bariba, and Dendi are also spoken in the country.
People in Benin are very warm and friendly, and just like in most other African countries, greeting is important to them. It’s considered only polite to strike up conversations with a greeting, while also expressing interest in the well being of the other person. The country is not very conservative, but people in Benin appreciate modest dressing.
Here, like in other African countries, the left hand is considered unclean, so don’t forget to only eat and greet with your right hand.
